Travel information Afghanistan history: Afghanistan is a Islamic republic in Central Asia with about 32 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Pakistan and China. Diagonally across the country runs high mountains with many fertile valleys and plains. South of them, in the Helmend pelvis, lie the desert. The plains of Amu-Darya is located in the north. Northwestern extends the rich valley Hari Rud. Afghanistan has three river basins. These rivers are regularly dry. In the eastern rivers flows. In Afghanistan there is a continental climate with, in some parts, a desert climate. The capital Kabul is composed of nearly 3 million inhabitants. Sightseeing in the city, the Garden of Baburen, the museum, the mosque Pol-i-Chisti and the bazaar to Jodi Maiwand. Other major cities are commercial Kandahar, pilgrim city of Mazar-e Sjarif and the historic city of Herat. Furthermore Dzjalalabad, textile city of Kunduz, Baghlan and Ghazni. At the World Heritage list of UNESCO are the cultural landscape and archaeological remains of the Bamiyan valley and the minaret and archaeological remains of Jam. Other attractions are the valleys of Paghman and Chakardara, the lakes of Band-i-Amir, holy city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the Karezi-Amir and Charikar and the nature reserve Hindu Kush.
