Travel information Bangladesh traditions & culture: Bangladesh is a republic with about 153 million inhabitants. The country is almost entirely enclosed by India. Myanmar is situated in the southeast. To the south lies the Bay of Bengal. The landscape consists of mangrove forests, bamboo forests, hills, sand dunes, alluvial islands, river deltas, mud banks and many rivers. In the southwest lie the Chittagong Hill Tracts, consisting of low hills covered with tropical rain forest remains. There is a tropical climate with monsoon seasons. Dhaka, with 10 million inhabitants, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. Sightseeing in the city include the Lal Bagh Fort, the 700 mosques, the Bara katra Palace, the old marketplace, the Chawk, the national museum and the Dhakeshwari temple. Other major cities are Chittagong, Rangpur, Bangladesh, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Tongi, Narayanganj, Khulna and Barisal. At the World Heritage list of UNESCO, the city of Bagerhat and the Buddhist Vihara monastery Somapura and the Sundarbans Mangrove Forests, to be found in the river delta of the Ganges. Other attractions are the Main Amati and Laimai land, Rang Amati and Kaptai lake, coral island of St. Martin and the Coxs Bazar beach.
