Taiwan is a country in Asia and has about 23 million inhabitants. The republic consists of the small island of Taiwan and Penghu islands, Lanyu, Green, Kinmen, Matsu archipelago and Wuchiu. Taiwan is located southeast of China. The Taiwan Strait lies between China and Taiwan. The mountain chains dominate the central and eastern part of the island. To the west lies a narrow strip of fertile land. In the east, a rocky coastline with the Taroko gap. In the south are tropical beaches. Furthermore, many afforestation, rivers, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs. Taiwan has a (sub) tropical climate with a lot of rainfall and high temperatures. The capital Taipei consists of 2 ½ million inhabitants and is the center for trade and culture. Sights are the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 skyscraper, many temples and night markets and Taipei Sea World. Other major cities include Hsinchu, former capital Tainan, Hualien, Jiufen, Puli, Taichung, Keelung, Kaohsiung port city and Gaoxiong. Sightseeing in Taiwan are the archaeological sites, national parks, historic sites, colonial fortresses, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Tainan, the city of the 100 temples, the Penghu archipelago, the island of the orchid, Lanyu and the Eastern Rift Valley.
