Tibet is a region with 9 million inhabitants. Since 1950 applies as a region within the People's Republic of China. One part falls under the political Tibet Autonomous Region, other parts are Chinese provinces. Neighboring countries are India, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar. Tibet is located on a mountain plateau surrounded by mountain ranges. The landscape is dominated by the mountains of the Tibetan Highlands. The northern part is desert-like. Centrally located grass steppes, rivers and lakes. A number of major rivers of Asia are born in Tibet. Due to its high altitude Tibet has a dry mountain climate. The capital Lhasa has 260,000 inhabitants and sights as the Norbulingka Institute, the architecture and the many Tibetan monasteries. Just outside the city lies the Drepung monastery. At the World Heritage list of UNESCO are the two palaces of the Dalai Lama, the Potala winter residence, with Jokhang Temple Monastery, and the Norbulingka summer residence, just as the ancient fort Yumbulagang in Nêdong. Other cities are Shigatse, Chamdo, Nagqu and the highest city in the world Wenzhuan. Other attractions are the castles and Tegla Kar Taktsee with Sanga Buddhist monastery, the Youyi Bridge, Dagzê suspension bridge, the Beijing-Lhasa railway, the Samye Monastery, valleys, lakes and mountain holy Mount Kailash.
