Malaysia is a parliamentary democracy with more than 25 million inhabitants. The western part is the Malay Peninsula, Malacca, which borders Thailand, Singapore and the Strait of Malacca. East Malaysia is the northern part of the island of Borneo. It borders on Indonesia and Brunei. The landscape is diverse. Many mountains, forests, jungle areas, mangrove forests, rivers, coastal plains, long beaches and coral reefs. Unfortunately, much depleted forests for palm oil plantations and rubber trees. There is a tropical climate, so it is always hot and humid. The capital, Kuala Lumpur has 2 million inhabitants and is characterized by both old colonial buildings and modern high-rise, like the Petronas Twin Towers and the Menara KL. Places are the royal Istana Negara, the Batu Caves, Central Market, Merdeka Square and the Lake Garden. Other major cities include Kota Bharu, Kuah, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan, Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Tanah Rata. Monuments on the World Heritage List of UNESCO are the two historic cities in the Strait of Malacca, George Town and Malacca and the national parks of Kinabalu and Gunung Mulu. Other attractions are the Formula 1 circuit, the amusement park Genting Highlands, the national parks and spectacular flora and fauna.
