India is a federal republic with more than 1.1 billion inhabitants. It is located in southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is partly a peninsula and shares the border in the northwest with Pakistan, in the north with China (Tibet), Nepal, Bhutan and northeastern with Myanmar and Bangladesh. South Eastern India has a coastline on the Indian Ocean and to the east lies the Gulf of Bengal. Just under India lies the island of Sri Lanka and the Maldives and south lie. The three biggest cities are in India Mumbai, Calcutta and, with 10 million inhabitants, the capital New Dehli. Geographically India is very diverse. India consists of many mountain ranges, the Indus-ganges-plain, the central highlands, the Thar Desert, 7000 kilometres of coastline, twelve major rivers and two archipelagos. In the world of UNESCO are many sights: Caves (Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta), National (Keoladeo, Sundarbans, Flowers valley, Nanda Devi), monumentengroepen (at Mahabalipuram, Khajuraho, Hampi and Pattadakal), churches, monasteries and temples (Goa , Chola temples, zonnetempel of Konarak and Mahabodi temple in Bodh Gaya), the fortress of Agra, the Taj Mahal, Manas wildlife park, the city of Fatehpur Sikri, the Buddhist monuments at Sanchi, the mountain railways, the station Bombai, the archaeological park Champaner - Pavagadh, the rocks of Bhimbetka in Dehli and the Red Fort complex, the Qutub Minar and its monuments and Humayun's tomb.
