Jordan is a kingdom with a population of slightly more than 6 million people. The parliamentary monarchy has five neighbours. In the northern Jordan shares its border with Syria and in the west lie Israel and the West Bank. In the northeast is Iraq and in the southeast bordering Saudi Arabia. The western boundary is determined by the River Jordan. The Hashemite kingdom has through the Gulf of Aqaba an open connection to the Red Sea and with the rest of the world. Jordan consists of three types of geological landscapes. The eastern Jordanian desert plateau, the Jordan Valley and the western hills. There is largely a desert climate. With slightly more than one million inhabitants is the capital Amman, with many cultural landmarks such as the Roman theatre, the Odeion, the Roman Forum, a folkloric Museum, the Temple of Hercules and a Byzantine church, palace of the Umayyad and various mosques. Other major cities are the port city of Aqaba and Al Karak with its crusaders fortress. Furthermore, Az-Zarqa, Irbid, Ma'an, Rihab, Madaba and the Greek-Roman-Byzantine city of Jerash. Sightseeing in Jordan are the archaeological sites of Gadara, Pella and Baydha and the Dead Sea. Furthermore, the nature Dana, Wadi Rum and Wadi Mujib, the town of Madaba and Mount Nebo and four desert castles, namely Qasr Mushatta, Qasr Azraq, and Qasr Amra Qasr Hraneh. In the world of UNESCO, the ruin city of Petra and Siq al-Berid, the historic bathhouse Qasr Amra and the archaeological excavation Um er-Rasas (Kastrom Mefa'a).
