China is a country in Asia with 1.3 billion inhabitants and sixteen neighboring countries. It has a coastline with the Yellow Sea and the Chinese seas. The landscape is dominated by mountains, highlands and hills. Furthermore, many rivers and lakes, plateaus, valleys, basins, deserts and plains. The coastal area in the south is mountainous, with many coves, bays and islands. For the most part there is a temperate climate. Furthermore, the regional climates, ranging from subtropical in the south to a polar climate in the northeast. The capital of China is Beijing. This city has 15 million inhabitants. The city has many museums, temples, cathedrals, mosques, parks, gardens and monuments. The best known are the Forbidden City and the Square of Heavenly Peace. Other important cities are Wuhan, Canton, Shenyang, Chengdu, Xi'an, Nanking, Chongqing, Shanghai and Tianjin. On the world heritage list of UNESCO are many old cities, historic centers, villages, temples, tombs, palaces, caves, landscapes, reserves and national parks. Furthermore, the Great Wall of China, the holy mountain Taishan, the archaeological site of the Beijing man, the Jiuzhaigou valley, Huangshan, the great Buddha of Leshan, the classical gardens of Suzhou, Yin Xu, the rock drawings of Dazuu, Wuyi, the Tulou of Fujian and the Qingcheng and Dujiangyan irrigation system. A special region in China is the city of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is located in southeast Asia and consists of 236 islands. It has no capital and consists of approximately 7 million inhabitants. It has been a Special Administrative Region of the Republic of China since 1997. It is enclosed by the South China Sea and neighboring China. Hong Kong is divided into four areas: Hong Kong Island's economic center, the New Territories, with lots of countryside, the Kowloon Peninsula and the Outlying Islands. Most islands are rocks that protrude from the sea. Hong Kong Island is hilly. Due to the rocky bottom, there are few rivers or lakes. Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. There are four seasons and the typhoon season with heavy storms. Hong Kong is known for its many museums, beaches, markets, temples and shopping centers. Other places of interest are Wetland Park and Ocean Park, the largest Buddha statue in the world, Tian Tan Buddha, Hong Kong International Airport, the IFC, the 2.2 km long Tsing Ma bridge, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, The Peak, Discovery Bay and Hong Kong Disneyland . Another special region within China is Macau. Macau is a small city island with around 500,000 inhabitants. It is located south of the People's Republic of China. It is a peninsula and lies in the South China Sea. Macau has been governed since 1999 as a special administrative region of China. Macau consists of three islands. Main island of Macau, Taipa and Coloane are interconnected with bridges and dams. The landscape consists mainly of beaches, hills and pine trees. There is a subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and dry, sunny winters. The capital is Macau. The historic center of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of the unique mix of European and Asian culture. Sights include the Bishop's Palace on Penha Hill, the facade of St. Paul's Cathedral, Monte Fort and Guia Fort. Furthermore, the many churches, temples, various museums and the classical Chinese garden of Lou Lim Ieoc. The casinos in Macau are an important part of the economy. Places of interest on Taipa island are the Pou Tai Un temple, the Macau Jockey Club and the Casa museum in the village of Taipa. On Coloane island, the Tam Kong temple, the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, the parks of Coloane and Seac Pai Van and the various beaches. The racing sport is also represented with the grand prize of Macau. The city is best known for the many casinos that are located in the city.
