Georgia is a transcontinental state with 4.5 million inhabitants. The republic borders on Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. In the west, Georgia has a coastline with the Black Sea. Georgia considers itself a European country. The landscape consists mainly of mountain ranges. In the south, lava plateaus and volcano cones. The soil is very fertile on the coast and along the river valleys. The climate in Georgia is largely subtropical. There is a steppe climate in the Caucasus. The capital Tbilisi has more than 1.25 million inhabitants. The city is known for its monumental botanical gardens, the Tbilisi history museum, the Sioniki cathedral and the Narikala fortress. Other cities are Kutaisi, Roestavi, Batumi, Soegdidi, Gori, Poti, Sochoemi, Tsinvali and Samtredia. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the museum town of Mtscheta, Upper Svanetia and Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. Other places of interest are the Staplia National Park, the Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi, the Nakalakevi Fortress in Khobi, the Black Sea Coast and the rocky towns of Uplistsikhe.
