Iran is a country in the Middle East with a population of nearly 66 million people. Neighboring countries are Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Adjacent seas are the Caspian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Iran consists of many mountain ranges, the central desert plateau and a fertile piece of lowland along the Caspian Sea. There is a continental climate, with hot summers and warm winters. The capital Tehran has 10 million inhabitants. Sights here are the former palace of the Shah, the bazaar, the national museum and the carpet museum. Other major cities are Mashhad, Tabriz, Shiraz, Abadan, the ancient capital of Isfahan and the religious city of Qom. Unesco's World Heritage List includes archaeological sites such as Chogha Zanbill, Takht-E Soleyman (The Throne of Solomon), Pasargadae, the cities of Bam and Persepolis, and Imam Square (Meidan Emam) in Isfahan. Furthermore, the village of Soltaniyeh (Sultaniya), the Behistun inscription and the three Armenian monasteries: St. Stephen's Church, Qara Kelisa and the Dzordzor Chapel.
