Laos is a country in Asia with 6.7 million inhabitants. It is enclosed by five neighboring countries, namely China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. The democratic people's republic is hilly with four mountain plateaus. Half of the land is covered with afforestation. A number of rivers flow. The Mekong River largely determines the border with Myanmar and Thailand. Laos has a tropical monsoon climate. The capital Vientiane has 400,000 inhabitants and a classical colonial European architecture. The city has as its sights the triumphal arch Putuxai, Xieng Khuan, the Buddhist temples Haw Pha Kaew, Wat Si Saket and Pha That Luang. Furthermore, the museum of Laotian art, the museum of the revolution and the boulevard along the Mekong River. Other cities are Savnnakhet, Pakxe, Luang Namtha, Sam Neua and Phonsavan. The UNESCO World Heritage List includes the city of Luang Prabang with its 66 temples and the cultural landscape of Champasak and temple complex Wat Phou. Other places of interest in Laos are the Boloven Plateau, the Si Phan Don archipelago (in the Mekong River), the plain of jars and the waterfalls of Li Phi and Khong Phapheng.
