Singapore is a country in Southeast Asia with around 4½ million inhabitants. The republic consists of the main island Singapore Island and 58 other islets, about half of which are inhabited. Other important islands are Jurong, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa. Singapore lies between Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is separated from these countries by the Strait of Johore, the Strait of Singapore, Strait of Karimata and the South China Sea. The central part of Singapore Island is a granite rock with forests surrounded by swamps. In the west hills and valleys and in the southeast it is flat and sandy. Little is left of the original vegetation, the tropical rainforest. There is a tropical climate. The capital is also called Singapore. Sights include Chinatown and Little India, the Night Safari, the Jurong Bird Park, Singapore Zoo, the Geylang District, the Singapore Art Museum and the National Museum of Singapore and the Empress Place Building.
