Turkey is a country with almost 72 million inhabitants. It is located on the Anatolia peninsula, between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The republic is largely in Asia and has a smaller European part. Neighboring countries in Europe are Bulgaria and Greece. In Asia Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Central and southeastern, Turkey has a desert-like landscape with salt lakes. Beaches and mountains on the coasts. Western much overgrown hillside landscape and mountains. Extensive plains, rivers, river dunes and swamps. There are 3 climate types. A continental climate prevails centrally and in the east. Along the Mediterranean Sea a Mediterranean climate. The north coast has a warm sea climate. The capital Ankara has 3½ million inhabitants and sights such as the Mausoleum of Atatürk, the Arslanhane mosque and the old city center Hisar. Other important cities are Bursa, Adana, Gaziantep, Konya, Antalya, Kayseri and the port cities of Izmir, Mersin and Istanbul. The UNESCO World Heritage Site lists the historic areas of Istanbul, the Goreme National Park and the rocks of Cappadocia, the city of Safranbolu and the Great Mosque of Divrigi. Furthermore, the archaeological sites of Troy, Hierapolis and Pamukkale, the ancient city of Xanthos-Letoon, the religious complex Nemrut Dagi and the ancient city of Hattusha.
