The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates, consisting of 4.6 million inhabitants. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate. It is located on the Arabian Peninsula. Neighboring countries are Saudi Arabia and Oman. It has a coastline along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The UAE have a privatized oil industry. The landscape is determined by the Rub al-Khali desert. Dunes blown up in the middle and south of the country. The foothills of the Hajar Mountains lie in the north and northeast. A few wadis in the east. There is a desert climate. The capital city Abu Dhabi consists of 1 million inhabitants. It is a modern city with skyscrapers, wide boulevards and shopping centers. Sights include the Qasr Al-Hosn palace, the Al Maqtaa fort, the Corniche district, the Khalifa park, Heritage Village, the Sheikh Zayed mosque, Lulu Island and the Dhow harbor. Just outside the city is the Jumeira Beach. Other important cities are Dubai, Fujairah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, Umm al-Qaiwain and Sharjah. Other attractions are the garden city of Al Ain, the archaeological park Hili, the many bazaars, the forts of Bithna and Fujairah, the harbor town of Khorfakkan, the old fort city of Hatta and the wadi Hatta.
