Vietnam is a country with 86 million inhabitants. Neighboring countries are China, Laos and Cambodia. Adjacent seas are the Gulf of Tonkin, the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. North Vietnam (Bac Bo) is dominated by the mountains and central highlands. To the east lie the alluvial plains, with rivers, the delta of the Song Hong river and a narrow coastal strip. In Central Vietnam (Trung Bo) there are mountains and coastal areas with beaches, lagoons and dunes. South Vietnam (Nam Bo) is hilly and houses the delta of the Mekong River. A chain of islets and coral reefs runs along the coast of Vietnam. The country has a tropical monsoon climate. The capital Hanoi has about 1½ million inhabitants. Sights are the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, various museums and the old town. Other cities are Hanoi, Can Tho, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City and Saigon. The Unesco World Heritage Site lists the Complex of Hué monuments, the Ha Long Bay, the ancient city of Hoi An, the My Son sanctuary and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Other places of interest are Halong Bay, the Mekong Delta, the mountains around Sa Pa, the Marble Mountains, the white beaches and red dunes near Mui Né, the Cu Chi tunnels, the city of Ho Chi Minh, Lak lake and the many national parks.
